Today was our first full day in Cairo. We spent the afternoon in Giza at the pyramids. To say it was an unreal experience is an understatement. These structures date back to the forth dynasty of ancient Egypt. The “Great Pyramid” of Egypt was built for Khufu the pharaoh. The construction took place during 2580-2660 BCE. The pyramid was the tallest man-made structure for 3,800 years. The pyramid used to consist of 2.3 millions individual blocks (the tip and other block have to taken over time due to looting). We actually got to go inside of the pyramid through a small passage. It was amazing and also very claustrophobic. You could see the chamber where the pharaoh was entombed.
The other two smaller pyramids belong to Khufu’s son and grandson, also pharaohs during the 4th dynasty.
Khafre pyramid complex consist of a valley temple, the sphinx temple, a causeway, a mortuary temple and his pyramid. The sphinx was quite a site to see! His pyramid is the only one of the three that has the casing stone left at the top. The top is visible from the city as you can spot the smooth limestone from miles away.
The last one is in honor of Menkaure. His was smallest in size and also housed three smaller pyramid temples for other family members, theses are referred to as the “queen’s pyramids,” and are situated next to his mortuary temple.
Overall the experience was everything I’d hoped it would. Seeing the pyramids has been something I’ve dreamed about since childhood. We also got to ride camels around the complex which was the highlight of the adventure.
